Chapter Seven

Ryker was still a little dazed from everything that had gone down while he’d been in town and he wanted some alone time to let it all settle in. Hoping to avoid everyone, especially Gage, whose shift had ended at two and whose blue Jeep was now parked in front of the house, Ryker headed straight for his garage. He parked next to his tow truck and unlocked the shop. Even though he kept it clean, the smell of grease and oil greeted him when he stepped inside. Thirsty, he walked to the small fridge. He opened the door, intent on a soda, but his gaze landed on what was left of the pie Shannon had brought him. He slid it out of the fridge. Since he’d had the forethought to leave the fork in the plate, he took the whole thing, along with his drink, to the back of the garage.

Even before he took the first bite, before the tartness of the raspberries and the sweetness of the peaches exploded over his tongue, his thoughts turned to Shannon. He hadn’t planned on inviting her to the ranch but after breaking down in her arms, after feeling the immense relief and sense of rightness having done so with her, it had just come out. And though he’d been as surprised as she was by the invitation, he didn’t regret extending it. He might not be looking forward to his brothers’ reactions and comments, but they were all worth it if it meant bringing Shannon home.

He shook his head as he finished the pie and licked the fork clean. A week ago he hadn’t even met her and now not only had they had sex, she was the woman he’d turned to when he’d needed emotional support. The only person he’d wanted to turn to. Granted, he’d almost told Gage, too, but that was more a reflex because his brother had been there. When Marcela had come in and broken the moment, given Ryker time to think, it wasn’t his brother he’d wanted. It was Shannon.

Given how much he hated change, finally sharing his feelings, especially with a woman he’d only known six days, was shocking. But he didn’t question it either. Because it felt right. Everything about being with Shannon felt right, despite her warning that she might leave town soon. Not if he had a say in it.

Ryker set the empty plate on a chair. He popped the cola, took a long sip of the fizzy drink. After setting the can next to the plate, he pulled the guitar from the locker and slung the strap over his shoulder. Running through songs in his head, he grinned as he chose a sappy love song. Picturing him and Shannon dancing in the field by his truck, he began strumming. By the time he hit the chorus he was humming along, lost in his memories.

“I didn’t know you played.”

Ryker startled. The pick sawed across the strings as he leapt to his feet.
